SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) registered a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Georgetown, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 18-25, 12-15), on Friday.
The Pirates held a 2-1 match lead, but they couldn't put Georgetown away as the Hoyas recorded a .471 attack percentage in set four and trailed only briefly in set five.
Georgetown (10-15, 4-8) won a very close set one, which featured 11 ties and four lead changes. With the set tied at 20, the Hoyas scored five of the final six points to capture set one, 25-21.
Seton Hall (11-13, 5-7) bounced back right away with their best set of the match in set two. The Pirates never trailed, scoring seven of the first nine points, and never looked back in route to a convincing 25-15 victory to tie the match at one set apiece.
Trailing 15-14 in set three, the Pirates went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 23-15 advantage. Freshman Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) tallied five of her 12 kills in set three alone as the Pirates won, 25-20, to take a 2-1 match lead.
Turning Point:
Georgetown dominated set four to tie the match at two sets apiece. The Hoyas recorded 18 kills and just two attack errors in the set. Still, the Pirates held the set close until late. A kill by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) cut the Hoya lead to 18-17, but Georgetown scored seven of the set's final eight points to win it, 25-18.
An ace by Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) gave the Pirates their only lead in set five, 7-6, but it was short-lived. Following a Georgetown timeout, the Hoyas scored five straight points to take an 11-7 advantage. The Hall cut the lead to two points on three occasions, but couldn't draw closer, and fell, 15-12.
