Pirates Grind Out Win Over Providence On Friday
1/20/2017 11:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (9-10, 2-6 BIG EAST) got back on track on Friday night, snapping a six-game skid with a 55-43 victory over Providence (9-10, 1-7 BIG EAST) at Walsh Gymnasium. Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) scored a career-high 18 points and The Hall turned in its best defensive effort of the season in the triumph.
The Hall led by six after a quiet first half, using a big run in the fourth quarter to finally pull ahead by double-digits and put the contest away. In addition to Winters offensively, JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) finished in double-figures with 12 points and Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) nearly missed a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds. For the Friars, Yoyo Nogic finished with 12 points and Clara Che notched 11.
Turning Points
After a back-and-forth start, The Hall opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead at 18-11. That spurt, which featured baskets from four different scorers, helped The Hall take a 24-18 lead into the half.
Up 37-32 going into the fourth quarter, The Hall again opened a frame strong and scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter capped by a Winters 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 44-32 with 7:22 to play. The Friars answered with a triple of their own to cut the lead back to single-digits, but a Jackson 3-pointer with 5:31 to play stretched the lead back to 13 and The Hall cruised to the double-digit win.
