Barracato's Walk-Off Highlights Doubleheader Split
2/22/2019 6:04:00 PM | Softball
The doubleheader came about after weather forced the Pirates out of the ECU Pirate Invitational, originally scheduled for this weekend in Greenville, N.C. The Hall will also aim to get in a doubleheader at home against local rival Saint Peter's on Saturday.
Game 1 – Lehigh 8, Seton Hall 4
How it Happened
- The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a fast lead with three runs in the top of the second
- Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) got the Pirates right back within a run in the bottom of the second, smacking a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-2
- Lehigh answered with four runs in the top of the third to go up up 7-2
- Peck got The Hall back into it with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, but that would be the last scoring of the game for the Pirates
- Lehigh tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to push the score to its final of 8-4
- Lehigh finished with a 16-5 edge in hits
- Peck went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored
- Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas), Barracato and Peck all doubled in the setback
- Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) turned in a strong relief appearance in the circle, allowing only one earned run in 5.0 innings pitched
- Lehigh ran rampant with 10 stolen bases, while Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) swiped a bag for the Pirates
How it Happened
- Lehigh again took an early lead, scoring single runs in the top of the first and third to go up 2-0
- The Pirates would pull even in the bottom of the fourth by way of a two-run home run from Allender
- Neither team struck again until the top of the seventh, when Lehigh pushed two across
- The Pirates would make their rally in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a one-out double from Jaden Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.)
- Katherine Matthys (Spring Branch, Texas) then draw a pinch-hit walk to put the tying runs aboard
- That brought Barracato to the plate, and the sophomore clubbed a game-winning three-run shot to right center
- The win for the Pirates came despite being out-hit 16-6
- Neither squad recorded an error in the contest
- Tate finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Pla was also 2-for-2 with a run and a steal
- Barracato finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and three RBIs
- The walk-off was the first of 2019 for the Pirates and Barracato's second career walk-off hit
The Pirates will face Saint Peter's for a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at noon. Stats and recap may be delayed due to the late-developing nature of the game.
