
Pirates Down Friars Behind Huge Third Quarter, 71-45

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five Pirates scored in double-figures and the Seton Hall women's basketball team outscored Providence, 24-6, in a game-defining third quarter, in route to a 71-45 victory on Friday.

The win is Seton Hall's ninth of the season in conference play, and guarantees at least a .500 mark in BIG EAST play.

Senior Barbara Johnson (Toronto, Canada) and junior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece. Senior Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) had 11 points, while freshman Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Alexia Allesch (Basking Ridge, N.J.) added 10 apiece.

The Story:
Leading 12-10 late in the first quarter, the Pirates went on a 13-3 run, which included the first eight points of the second quarter, to build a commanding 25-13 advantage with 8:16 to go before halftime. The Hall's defense held Providence without a field goal for the first 6:21 of the second quarter, and saw its lead get as high as 13 points on a made jumper by Johnson with just over 5:00 left in the first half.

Providence bounced back with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to cut Seton Hall's lead to five points, but the Pirates scored the last four points of the half, including a shot-clock-beating floater by Park-Lane to take a 33-24 lead into the locker room.

Ahead 36-28 early in the third quarter, The Hall scored seven straight, and a jumper by Elmore put it on top, 43-28, with 6:55 left in the period.Â

Seton Hall went on to score the final 14 points of the third quarter, and ran the run to 16 unanswered early in the fourth quarter to build a 58-30 advantage early in the final period. Providence never got closer than a 26-point deficit the rest of the way.

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, February 16 when it travels to Omaha, Neb. for a BIG EAST contest against Creighton. The game will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
