NEW YORK – Seton Hall's Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Senior Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) was also awarded a spot on the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
In the Pirates' win over Villanova on Sunday, Carr went 3-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and three runs batted in. Carr also came around to score the winning run on a wild pitch in the tenth inning to finally put the Pirates over the Wildcats in a back-and-forth game. The rookie also tossed 9.1 innings with nine punchouts. It is Carr's second time winning the award after she did so on March 8.
Barracato had herself a historic weekend as she hit .545 at the plate over the three-game series with Villanova. With her second double of the weekend, Barracato broke the all-time program record for two-baggers with her 49th double in her career. Barracato finished Sunday's win four-for-five at the dish with two doubles to give her an even 50 two-baggers in her time as a Pirates.
Barracato is the fifth different Pirate to be awarded a spot of the conference's Weekly Honor Roll this season with Kiana Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.), Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.), Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) and Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) being the others.
The Pirates will play six games in five days as they take on the likes of UConn for a three game series on Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Providence for a three-game series over the weekend to round out the regular season.
