LAST WEEK
Seton Hall battled last week, but ultimately fell in a pair of four-set matches on the road in BIG EAST Conference play. Junior Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) erupted for a career-high 20 kills, but the Pirates fell at St. John's, 3-1 (16-25, 24-26, 26-24, 22-25), on Wednesday. Bucciarelli had a career-high 20 kills to go with five digs and two blocks. Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) tallied 14 kills, only four attack errors, four digs, three aces and three blocks in a strong all-around match. Junior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) finished with 27 assists and eight digs.
Â
Walsh had 11 kills and Jakubowski notched 20 assists and eight digs, but The Hall fell in four sets at Butler, 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 16-25, 19-25), on Friday. Five Pirates collected at least six kills and were led by Walsh's 11. Sophomore Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) was the most efficient of the group with seven kills, only one attack error, and a .500 attack percentage. She also had five digs and three blocks.
Â
WHO'S IN THE TOP-5
- Walsh currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST with 3.44 kills per set. She also ranks fifth with 3.79 points per set.
- Freshman Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) currently ranks tied for third in the BIG EAST with 30 service aces. She ranks third in the conference with 84 total blocks.
Seton Hall and Marquette will meet for the 27th time in history on Friday. The Golden Eagles have dominated the all-time series with wins in 21 of 26 prior meetings. Marquette has won 12 straight matches against the Pirates, including a three-setter earlier this season.
Â
In a matchup between two teams combining for only one loss in BIG EAST Conference play entering the contest, The Hall fell to No. 18 Marquette, 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 16-25) on Oct. 8 in Walsh Gym.Â
Â
Seton Hall had only three more attack errors than the Golden Eagles, but it was Marquette's defensive back line that prevented the Pirates from regularly finding the floor. Walsh led The Hall with nine kills, while Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) had a team-best 11 digs. The Hall had an impressive afternoon defensively at the net with four Pirates collecting at least four blocks. Junior Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) led the team with six blocks.
Â
Marquette enters this weekend once again as one of the top teams in the country. They currently rank No. 19 in the nation in the AVCA Poll with a 16-2 record overall and a 7-1 mark in BIG EAST play. They've registered wins over No. 11 Kentucky, No. 25 Illinois and LSU. Their only losses came against a pair of ranked teams, No. 6 Wisconsin back on Sept. 2 and No. 18 Creighton just last weekend. The five-set loss in Omaha snapped a 12-match winning streak for the Golden Eagles.Â
Â
SCOUTING DE PAUL
Seton Hall and DePaul will meet for the 26th time in history on Saturday. Historically, the series has been dominated by the Pirates as they won the first 14 contests, but lately the Demons have flipped the script. However, The Hall snapped a four-match losing streak to the Blue Demons earlier this season with a five-set win in Walsh Gym.
Â
Walsh had a match-high 21 kills to go with a career-high 17 digs and the Pirates outlasted DePaul, 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 15-13), on Oct. 7. The Pirates used the same recipe tonight as they did to defeat UConn in Walsh Gym two weeks earlier. The Hall won the first two sets in convincing fashion, before dropping sets three and four. The Pirates turned it back on for a strong effort in set five for the victory. The Hall has now played five sets in four of its first five BIG EAST matches so far this year and has three victories to show for it.
Â
Jakubowski also had a double-double, finishing with 23 assists and 13 digs. Â Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.), Bucciarelli and Wallace all also reached double-figures in kills.
Â
DePaul enters the weekend with a 6-14 overall record and a 2-6 mark in conference play. They started the year with six straight losses, but bounced back with impressive victories over Virginia Tech, Saint Louis and Loyola Chicago in non-conference play. However, DePaul enters the weekend having lost their last four matches, including a four-set loss at Xavier on Friday and a close five-set loss at No. 21 Creighton on Sunday. Despite their unimpressive record, the Blue Demons are 5-1 at home this year.
Â
UP NEXT
Next weekend, Seton Hall will return home to Walsh Gymnasium for a pair of matches. The Hall will host Creighton on Friday for a 6:00 p.m. match and Xavier on Saturday for a match that begins at 5:00 p.m. Both matches will streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available for FloSports subscribers.
