SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team committed only one more attack error than the No. 15 Bluejays, but the Creighton defense proved too much as the Pirates fell, 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 11-25), on Friday in Walsh Gymnasium.
Â
No. 15 Creighton collected 57 digs, a season-high for a Seton Hall opponent in a three-set match, and held the Pirates to a .081 attack percentage. Although the Bluejays committed only one less attack error, 14-to-13, they were far more efficient, registering a .321 attack percentage for the match.Â
Â
Junior Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) and sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) led The Hall with five kills apiece. Senior Jennifer Giron (Benicia, Calif.) had a team-high 11 digs to go with four assists.
Â
SET 1:
Creighton spent little time in putting the Pirates in a major hole, opening the match with 14 of the first 16 points. The Pirates, however, played the Bluejays nearly evenly the rest of the way. The Hall scored seven of the next 10 points, and an ace by Walsh cut its deficit to 17-9. Moments later, a block by Wallace and Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) downed Creighton's lead to only seven points, 19-12, but The Hall couldn't get closer. Creighton went on to win, 25-16.
Â
SET 2:
The Pirates found themselves in another early deficit in set two, but didn't wait to climb out of it. Down 8-2, The Hall went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at nine. Creighton scored the next three points and the Pirates couldn't draw even again. Leading 15-13, the Bluejays went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 24-14 advantage. Sophomore Faith LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had her first career kill, and the Pirates staved off two set points, but ultimately fell, 25-16.
Â
SET 3:
Creighton dominated the final set, racing out to a 16-2 lead. Trailing 24-8, The Hall scored three straight, but succumbed to the Bluejays, 25-11, to close out the match. Creighton had a .464 attack percentage in the final set, compared to .081 for The Hall.
