SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Seton Hall and Villanova will meet on Friday for the 52nd time in history. The Wildcats have a 33-18 all-time series lead. The teams have split the last four contests. Last season, each team won on the road.
Â
Villanova is coming off a 10-20 final record in 2022, which includes a 6-12 mark in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats did not qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, but closed the season with wins in three of their final four matches. Middle blocker Kiera Booth was named to the All-BIG EAST Team.
Â
In the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Wildcats were picked to finish seventh. Villanova returns an experienced group with its top five point scorers, top assister and digs leader returning. Two players combined for 29 of 30 starts at libero for Villanova in 2022, and both return for another year.
Â
Villanova has already surpassed its overall win total from a year ago, and enters the weekend with a 12-8 record. They're 3-5 in BIG EAST matches. Most recently, the Wildcats split a pair of matches last weekend, defeating Georgetown on the road in four sets, and getting swept at Creighton. Other BIG EAST victories include sweeps of Xavier and Connecticut, both at home.  Â
Â
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
On Saturday, Seton Hall and Georgetown will lock up for the 47th time in history. The Hoyas own a slim 24-22 lead in the all-time series, but the Pirates have dominated the series recently. The Hall has won five of the last six matches and nine of the last 11. Last season, the teams split the home-and-home series with each team winning at home.
Â
Georgetown is coming off a disappointing 4-25 season overall, which included a 2-16 mark in BIG EAST play. In addition to defeating Seton Hall in five sets on Sept. 30, the Hoyas defeated Villanova in four sets for their only other conference victory. Georgetown closed the season with a 13-match losing streak.
Â
In the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Hoyas were predicted to finish 11th in 2023. Five newcomers are representing Georgetown Grace Albaugh, Mei Corricello, Maria Flippova, Kamryn Lee-Caracci, and Emily Wen. Outside Hitters Mary Grace Goyena and Giselle Williams return after leading the Hoyas last season with 2.91 and 2.38 kills per set, respectively.
Â
Georgetown enters the weekend vastly improved with a 12-8 record overall and a 3-5 mark in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas are coming off a pair of losses last week, falling to Villanova at home on Wednesday, and at Creighton in three sets on Friday. Their BIG EAST victories include a sweep of DePaul and four-set wins over Butler and Connecticut.
