Strong Singles Play Leads Women's Tennis

PRINCETON, NJ (October 15, 2000) - Freshmen Courtney Iseldyke (East Brunswick, NJ), Kim Barfuss (Denville, NJ), Nicole Cercone (North Seminole, FL), and junior Jasmine Wolcott (Denver, CO), each won both of their singles matches to ensure a 4-3 victory over West Virginia and a 4-3 win over Brown in their final two matches of the ECAC / ITA Team Invitational.
The Pirates lost the tournament opener to Princeton, the eventual runner-up, 7-0 and were placed into the consolation bracket, which they won by edging Brown, 4-3. Winning the consolation bracket clinches a ninth place finish for the Pirates in the 16 team field.
Barfuss' two victories at third singles were both three set matches and improve her fall season win total to nine which leads the team. She beat Anna Maria Underwood of West Virginia, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Bridget Barbara of Brown, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Cercone lost only five games in her final two matches of the tournament. She defeated Maria Binder of West Virginia, 6-3, 6-1, and Maria Elena del Valle of Brown, 6-1, 6-0.
Iseldyke edged West Virginia's Patricia Kempton in a three sets, 3-6, 6-5 (7-5), 6-3, and cruised past Brown's Heather Young, 6-4, 6-3.
Wolcott defeated West Virginia's Courtney Howell, 6-4, 6-4, and Brown's Caroline Casey, 4-6, 6-5, Retired.
The Pirates return to action on Oct. 20-22 at the Dartmouth Invitational.
