Kotynski's Home Run Lifts Softball Over Marist, 3-2

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Senior Marlena Kotynski (North Arlington, NJ) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to lift Seton Hall to a 3-2 win over Marist in the second game of a softball doubleheader today at Cameron Field. The Pirates won the first game, 2-0, as Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) threw a one-hitter.
The Pirates trailed 1-0 in the second game until they scored the go-ahead runs in the fourth inning. After Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Hts, NY) and Kotynski reached base, Amy Efchak (Wallington, NJ) hit a two-run double to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Marist tied the game in the fifth when Amanda Fretto scored on a Seton Hall error.
Christina Shanko (Delmont, PA) earned the win for Seton Hall, striking out seven in six innings of work to improve her record to 11-5. Beaver posted the save, striking out all three Marist batters in the seventh.
Marist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Michelle Gosh singled and eventually scored on a Pirate error. Nichole Fox was the losing pitcher for Marist.
In the first game, Seton Hall scored both runs in the second inning. Lamb singled and then scored on a sacrifice by Tammy Timko (Sparta, NJ), while Amy-Lynn Mellin (Petaluma, CA) doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice by Efchak.
Beaver struck out nine batters and allowed just one hit to improve her record to 10-6 on the season. Melanie Kasack was the losing pitcher for Marist.
Seton Hall improves to 22-12 while Marist drops to 25-15.
