WEST POINT, NY (Sept. 17, 2000)- Freshmen Nicole Cercone (North Seminole, FL) and Kim Barfuss (Denville, NJ) took home singles championships while junior Kyli Lassalle (New Iberia, LA) won a consolation title on the final day of the Eastern Collegiate Tennis Tournament in West Point, New York on September 17.
Cercone defeated Katie Stammen of Massachusetts in easy fashion, 6-2, 6-0, to win the championship at third singles. The fourth-seeded Cercone overcame a grueling three-set match against number-one seeded Lauren DeCarlo in the semi-finals.
Kim Barfuss, the tournament's second seed, overpowered Kaitlin Russo of Loyola in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to claim her title at fourth singles. Barfuss dominated the tournament, losing only seven games in four matches. Her semi-final match was a 6-0, 6-0 shut out of Army's Leah Gaunt.
Kyli Lassalle lost her opening match in the first singles tournament, but then won her way through the consolation brackets for her title. Lassalle defeated Annie Hamilton of Massachusetts in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, in the consolation finals.
Freshman Courtney Iseldyke (East Brunswick, NJ) had a fine performance in her first collegiate tournament losing in the finals of the second singles tournament to Massachusetts' Francesca Mancini, 2-6, 1-6. Iseldyke, the fourth seed, defeated the number-one seed Cheryl Hamilton of Army, in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The first doubles team of juniors Beth Dugan (Somerset NJ) and Jasmine Wolcott (Denver, CO), and the second doubles team of junior Danielle Houle (Charlton, MA) and freshman Casey Fry (Tinley Park, IL) both won first round matches and then bowed out of the tournament in the quarterfinals.
The Pirates return to action next weekend, Sept. 22-24, as they take part in the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
