POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 24, 2001) - Senior righthander Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL) threw a one-hit shutout in game one and junior shortstop Kim Jackson (Rockaway, NJ) drove in three runs in the second game to give the Seton Hall softball team a doubleheader sweep of Marist, 4-0 and 7-2. Seton Hall improves to 6-5 on the season while Marist falls to 3-10-1.
Jackson was 5-for-7 with three RBI in the doubleheader, while senior third baseman Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Heights, NY) also drove in three runs and was 2-for-7 with two doubles. Junior first baseman Amy Mellin (Petaluma, CA) was 4-for-8 on the day with two runs scored.
Seton Hall scored an unearned run in the first inning of game one but it was all Beaver needed, as she faced just one batter over the minimum. Marist's first hit of the game came in the fifth inning on the first batter. Beaver (3-2) struck out nine and walked just one batter, which was thrown out trying to steal in the third inning.
The Pirates added insurance in the fifth inning, plating three runs. Lamb drove in Mellin, who had singled, with a bloop double, and then scored when Jackson dropped a single into right field that got by the Marist right fielder.
Sophomore Christina Shanko (Delmont, PA) picked up the victory in game two for the Pirates, hurling five innings of two-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out five with no walks. She improved to 3-3 on the year and has won three straight.
Jackson was 3-for-4 in game two, driving in three runs, while Lamb knocked in two runs, both on a third-inning double that gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Lamb would score twice more in the game, once in the fifth on a two-run single by Jackson and again in the seventh on another Jackson rbi-single.
Seton Hall returns to action on Wednesday, March 28, when the Pirates host Stony Brook at 2:00 p.m. at Cameron Field in South Orange, NJ.
