WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ (April 3, 2001) - Seton Hall received dominating pitching performances from senior Misty Beaver (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and sophomore Christina Shanko (Delmont, PA/Franklin Regional) en route to a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth, 5-0 & 7-1, in softball action. Beaver threw a two-hit shutout in the first game, striking out 11, and Shanko tossed a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in the nightcap. Seton Hall improves to 12-7 overall and Monmouth drops to 15-8.
In the first game, Beaver (6-3) had a no-hitter going through 5 1/3 innings before allowing a double to Stacey Schramm. She struck out the next hitter, Mandy Schramm, and ended the inning when Stacey Schramm was thrown out at third base trying to steal. Monmouth's only other threat came in the bottom of the seventh, when the Hawks loaded the bases on a walk, a single and another walk. Beaver struck out Shannon Lyman to end the game.
The Pirates got their first run of the game in the third inning when a sacrifice fly by senior Marlena Kotynski (Lyndhurst, NJ/Queen of Peace) plated senior Kerry Kirk (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey), who was hit by a pitch, bunted to second and got to third on a wild pitch.
The Pirates also added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by senior Melissa Kern (Montclair, NJ), who finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI. Kirk stole home on a double steal for Seton Hall's third run in the fifth inning, and junior Ali Remakus (Hallstead, PA/Blue Ridge) knocked in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning.
In game two, Shanko gave up just a first-inning homer and walked one to improve to 6-4. She already had three runs to work with as the Pirates struck for three in the top of the first inning. Freshman Mary Carroll Smith (Nutley, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy) singled to lead off the game and went to second on a single by senior Vickie Lamb (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown). Smith was driven in by a Kotynski single and freshman Rachel Kilbert (Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) reached on an error, which scored Lamb. Kilbert was then caught in a run-down long enough for Kotynski to steal home for Seton Hall's third run of the inning.
In the sixth inning the Pirates put the game away with four runs. Kern walked with the bases loaded for the first run, freshman McKenzie Richards (Modesto, CA/Johansen) and Smith hit back-to-back sacrifice flies and Kern stole home on a double steal for the fourth and final run of the inning.
Kotynski was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game and Lamb was 2-for-4. The Pirates again played without starting shortstop Kim Jackson (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) and starting second baseman Ranae Bart (River Edge, NJ/River Dell). Jackson has a sprained ankle and has missed the last six games and Bart, who had briefly moved to shortstop in Jackson's absence, has missed the last three with a shoulder injury.
Seton Hall returns to action on Saturday, April 7, when the Pirates host Providence College in a doubleheader at Meadowlands Park in South Orange, NJ, at noon.
