Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Seton Hall softball team swept its second doubleheader in a row, beating Long Island University 6-5 and 11-5 at the LIU Softball field on Tuesday. A three run first-inning home run from freshman Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Pirates to their game one victory. Sophomore Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) was SHU’s star in game two, going 3-for-4 with a three-run blast in the seventh inning. Seton Hall improves to 20-20 overall, while Long Island drops to 18-18 on the year.

Senior Akoua Lonergan (Allentown, Pa.) got the Pirate offense rolling in game one, leading off the game with a home run, her fifth of the season. After tallying five runs in the first frame, SHU extended its lead in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Maggie Simkiss (Exton, Pa.) singled up the middle, bringing freshman Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) home, giving the Pirates a 6-2 lead.

LIU mounted a comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and entered the seventh inning down only 6-4. In the final inning, sophomore Alyssa Winslow hit a solo-home run to cut the Blackbirds’ deficit to just one. However, LIU failed to muster any more offense, and Seton Hall held on for the one-run win.

Freshman Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) (9-7) started and earned the victory for the Pirates. Schweitzer pitched 5.2 innings, striking out one and allowing just two earned runs.

In game two, Long Island got on the board first, tallying two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Seton Hall responded with eight-unanswered runs, never trailing after its three-run third inning. SHU made the score 5-2 in the fifth, when Waldron hit a two-run double down the left field line. Three Pirates, Best, Jessica Schulien (Pequannock, N.J.) and Waldron, had RBI’s in the team’s three-run sixth inning, and Best’s seventh-inning homer completed SHU’s offensive outburst.

Seton Hall sophomore Maura Lund (Oak Park, Ill.) (1-0) was the game two winner. Lund pitched 6.0 innings striking out four batters.

The Pirates return to action this Thursday, Apr. 13, when they host the Iona Gaels in a 3:30 p.m., doubleheader at Ivy Hill Park in South Orange, N.J.
