DELAWARE, Ohio – Two Seton Hall softball players earned Academic All-District honors on Thursday when seniors Katie Pierce (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and Caitlin White (Lincoln University, Pa./St. Mark’s) were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 2 University First Team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Academic All-District honorees are chosen based on the criteria of being a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student and having at least a grade-point average of 3.20. Nominated student-athletes from that district are then voted on by members of CoSIDA based on a combination of athletic and academic achievement. Both Pierce and White are now automatically nominated for Academic All-America status.
Pierce, a double major in physics and engineering, recently completed a dominating offensive season for Seton Hall. She led the Pirates in batting average (.368), runs scored (47), hits (64), doubles (16), triples (5), home runs (9), runs batted in (46) and slugging percentage (.672). She set the single-season record for hits and doubles, while breaking the all-time Seton Hall record in those categories plus runs scored. She started all 56 games for the Pirates at shortstop and was named the Seton Hall Female Athlete of the Year. Pierce boasted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.42.
White had a strong year for Seton Hall despite a hamstring injury that forced her to miss several games in the middle of the season. A biology major who carried a 3.96 GPA, White played in 38 games, starting 36. The rightfielder hit .321 with 25 runs scored and a team-hit 14 stolen bases, while collecting 35 hits. White is a member of the All-District Academic First Team for the second year in a row and last year she was named an First Team Academic All-American. She was named Seton Hall’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Pierce and White are now on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. White (2005), Megan Meyer (2004 & 2005) and Kristine Pallazzo (1989) are the only Seton Hall softball players to ever earn Academic All-America status. District 2 consists of schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The University division consists of NCAA Division I institutions in that district.
