Men's Soccer Announces 2006 Schedule

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall has announced the men’s soccer schedule for the upcoming season. Coming off their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Pirates will play a 17-game schedule in 2006, which includes two in-season tournaments and games against six NCAA participants from last season.

Seton Hall will kick-off the season against James Madison and Virginia Commonwealth in the VCU Classic on Aug. 25 and 27. SHU head coach Manfred Schellscheidt, with a career mark of 199-118-36, will be looking to earn his 200th career win in the opener, but will face a JMU team that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Following the opening weekend, the Pirates will face Adelphi and Monmouth at a tournament on the campus of Monmouth before opening the BIG EAST Conference season.

The Pirates will kick-off their home schedule against perennial national power St. John’s on Sept. 8 in the BIG EAST-opener for both schools. SHU will then host Syracuse on Sept. 10, before embarking on a grueling stretch of four straight conference games against Rutgers, Villanova, West Virginia and Georgetown.

Seton Hall is scheduled to play just five home games, this season. In addition to St. John’s and Syracuse, the Pirates will play Notre Dame, Providence and Pittsburgh at Owen T. Carroll Field. The rest of SHU’s road slate includes non-conference games at local rivals, Penn and Princeton, while facing BIG EAST foes Connecticut and Marquette on the road. St. John’s, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Connecticut and Providence all represented the BIG EAST in the NCAA Tournament last year.

The BIG EAST Championship kicks off with the first round play-in matches on Oct. 25 and 26. The top two teams from each division will host the winners in quarterfinal matches on Oct. 28 and 29. The BIG EAST Semifinals and Final will be played on the campus of Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J., on Nov. 3 and 5.

Seton Hall posted a 13-4-3 overall mark last year and went 6-3-2 in the BIG EAST to earn a second-place finish in the Blue Division. The Pirates graduated eight seniors and lost junior All-American Sacha Kljestan to the MLS, but return a talented core of 16 lettermen. Among the returnees are three All-BIG EAST honorees in seniors Teddy Niziolek (Clifton, N.J.) and Gordon Kljestan (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.).
