Caitlin White Earns Prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Recent Seton Hall graduate Caitlin White (Lincoln University, Pa.), an outfielder on the softball team from 2003-06, has received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship of $7,500, the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Tuesday. White, a biology major at Seton Hall who carried a 3.96 GPA, is one of 58 NCAA student-athletes (29 male, 29 female) who compete in spring sports to receive the prestigious award.

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

White will attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. She has received a slew of academic and athletic honors in her career, including CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-America recognition in each of the last two years, the 2006 Seton Hall Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and academic awards on the District and BIG EAST Conference levels. White was also an All-BIG EAST and All-Region performer on the field as a junior. She hit over .300 in each of the last three years and led the Pirates in batting as a sophomore and junior.

Nomination information is sent to faculty athletics representatives, athletics directors, senior women administrators and conference commissioners of NCAA member institutions in September for fall sports, in January for winter sports and in March for spring sports. Selections are made three times each academic year. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and the award recipients are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.

Seton Hall swimmer Matt Miklius (Palatine, Ill.) received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in the winter. Miklius held a 4.0 grade point average for all four years of college. A physics major with a math minor, he was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America At-Large selection in both 2006 and 2005, earning first and third team honors, respectively. He was a First Team District 2 selection in both 2005 and 2006, and was a Second Team District 2 selection in 2004. A tri-captain of the squad, he was named Seton Hall’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2006.
