PITTSBURGH, PA. Freshmen Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) each scored a goal to lead the Seton Hall men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh on Saturday. The victory was the first on the road this season for the Pirates (6-6-0, 3-3-0).
SHU wasted little time in jumping out to a lead. In the 10th minute, Pitt goalkeeper Jordan Marks stopped an Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) shot, but Welker was there to control the rebound out of a pile up and finish the job for his fifth goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates struck again less than 10 minutes later. Freshman Steven Rose (Acton, Mass.) passed to Giusfredi, who then found Martinez with a cross. Martinez beat a defender and found the back of the net for the third time this season, making it 2-0.
Giusfredi picked up assists on both scores, his sixth and seventh of the year. He now has a team-high 21 points.
SHU appaeared headed to a shutout win before the Panthers (1-10-2, 0-6-1) picked up a late score. In the 89th minute, Joe Prince-Wright set up Matt Baker in front of the net for a scoring shot past Pirate sophomore Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) to make it 2-1. But Seton Hall held on over the final minute to secure the victory, evening both its conference and overall record.
Martinez had a team-high three shots for the Pirates, followed by Giusfredi with two. Baker led Pitt with three.
McHenry had five stops in the SHU net, while Marks made two saves for the Panthers. Pittsburgh managed to outshoot Seton Hall, 14-10, while the Pirates had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
SHU returns to action at home on Wednesday against Adelphi at 7:00 p.m.
