SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall men’s soccer team dropped its fourth straight game on Wednesday night, falling 2-1 to Georgetown at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates (7-10-0, 3-7-0) close out the regular season on Saturday at home against No. 1 Connecticut.
Seton Hall has clinched a No. 6 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship.
The Pirates jumped ahead early when freshman Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) took a pass from junior Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) and blasted it past Georgetown netminder Matthew Brutto from 20 yards out. It was the fourth goal of the season for Martinez and the eighth assist for Giusfredi.
Just over seven minutes later, the Hoyas (7-10-0, 5-5-0) would tie things up. Alex Verdi slipped a shot past SHU keeper Sean Carr (Glendora, N.J.) off a free kick by Scott Larrabee to make it 1-1. The teams entered the half tied.
Georgetown came up with the decisive goal in the 60th minute when Conor Neusel took a long pass down center from Seth C’Debaca and beat Carr to the right for a 2-1 advantage.
The Pirates best chance to tie came in the 81st minute. Martinez worked to within feet of the goal but had his close range shot stopped by Brutto. Freshman Dritan Sela (Wayne. N.J.) fired a shot off the rebound that was blocked before shooting again off the ensuing rebound, but Brutto was there to make the save.
Martinez had a game-high seven shots for SHU, while three players had three attempts for the Hoyas. Georgetown finished with an 18-17 shot advantage.
Carr and Brutto each made four stops in net.
