BOX SCORE
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Two goals and two assists from freshman Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) led the Seton Hall men’s soccer team to a 5-1 romp over Marquette on Saturday afternoon. Junior Carlos Salazar (Kearny, N.J.) added a pair of goals in the win, his first two of the year.
The Pirates (5-6-0, 2-3-0) had several chances early on, but the Golden Eagles (2-8-1, 1-5-0) managed the game’s first score. In the 23rd minute, Scott Miller found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick from Anthony Colaizzi that was initially touched by Dan Addis to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
SHU responded in the 43rd minute when senior Jon Lewandowski (Midland Park, N.J.) found Salazar in the middle off a free kick for a scoring shot. The teams headed into halftime tied 1-1.
The Pirates kept the momentum coming out of the break and wasted little time taking the lead. In the 50th minute, Martinez hit junior Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) with a perfect feed down the middle, allowing him to beat goaltender Matt Pyzdrowski to the ball and go in for an uncontested score, his seventh of the season.
Just over three minutes later, Martinez controlled the ball in the midfield and let loose a blast from 25 yards out the whistled into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal and a 3-1 Pirate advantage.
SHU continued to click on offense as the half wore on. In the 71st minute, Martinez took a Giusfredi pass and beat Pyzdrowski to the left for his second tally of the match. Just 28 seconds later, Martinez fed Salazar on the right side for a high shot that snuck in under the crossbar to make it 5-1.
Sophomore netminder Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) picked up the win in goal, making six saves. Pyzdrowski had five stops for Marquette.
The Pirates enjoyed a comfortable edge in shots at 23-14, including a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. Giusfredi accounted for seven attempts while Martinez added six. Mike Carlson paced the Golden Eagles with three.
Martinez’s six points are the most in a game by a Pirate since Jerrod Laventure had seven against George Mason in 2004.
The Pirates return to action next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Pittsburgh.
