LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Seton Hall softball team lost, 7-4, against Utah State in day three of the Louisville Slugger Classic on Sunday. The Pirates are now 0-5 on the young season.
Seton Hall finally got the bats going against the Aggies with eight hits in the contest, but still left 10 runners on base. Sophomore Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) and Danielle Steinsefzer (Plano, Texas) both went 3-for-4, and Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) went 2-for-3. Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) never really found her groove and fell to 0-3 for the year.
Utah State struck in the top of the first, but Seton Hall put together three straight base hits to bring home Steinseifzer to tie the game at one.
The Aggies used a big fourth inning to take a 5-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Waldron tried to start a rally with a two-out double to right. With two runners on, the Pirates grounded into a fielders choice to end the threat.
Utah State tacked on two more runs in the fifth, but the Pirates' first two hitters reached base, and junior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) drove in a run. With runners on first and third, Steinseifzer's base hit scored Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.). The Aggies starting pitcher, Lindsey Benson, dropped a Waldron pop up to bring Best home to make it 7-4 after five.
Another two out rally forced Benson out of the game in the sixth, but the Pirates left two more baserunners on. Seton Hall had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh after another Steinseifzer hit, but the Pirates could not get another clutch hit to come back.
The Pirates conclude play at the Louisville Slugger Classic against Utah on Monday. First pitch is set for noon.
