COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Seton Hall softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling 8-0 to Tennessee Tech and 23-0 to Mississippi State. The Pirates (0-8) return to action tomorrow to face Florida State and Nebraska.
In the bottom of the second, Tennessee Tech opened things up, using consecutive singles from Kristyn Castonzo, Kerilyn Mongar, and Katie Sutherland to score the games first run off of Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.). Following a walk to load the bases, Amanda Glover drove in two with a single to make it 3-0.
With the bases loaded once again in the third, TTU’s Sutherland knocked in two more runs with a single off Schweitzer. In the fifth, Danielle Zanzalari (Cateret, N.J.) walked three straight batters with one out. Glover singled home a run, followed by a two-run sacrifice fly by Krystina Dobbs that resulted in the eight-run rule taking effect.
Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J.) picked up the only Pirate hits, back-to-back second inning singles.
In game two of the day, Mississippi State exploded for eight runs in the first inning, 10 more in the second, and two more in the third to go up 20-0. The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in their final two at-bats.
Maura Lund (Oak Park, Ill.) took the loss for the Pirates, lasting just one third of an inning. Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) doubled in the fourth inning for the lone SHU hit.
