COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Seton Hall softball team earned its first win of the season by defeating Hofstra, 5-3, in the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Pirates (1-10) would have played another game Sunday, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Two costly errors put Seton Hall in a 2-0 hole after the first inning. In the top of the third, Hofstra committed two errors of their own and the Pirates tied the game, 2-2. A wild pitch brought another Pride run across the plate to make it 3-2 after four.
The Hall's first two batters of the fifth reached base, but the Pirates were quickly down to their final out of the inning after a pop-up and strikeout. SHU's next batter was sophomore Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.), who singled to drive in the tying run. Freshman Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) was able to score on the throw and the Pirates took a 4-3 lead. Seton Hall then loaded the bases, and pinch-hitter Madon Maile (Jenkintown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to knock in an insurance run.
Junior Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.), who pitched six innings in relief, got into a little jam in the bottom of the inning. With two on and two outs, Hofstra hit a ground ball back to Constantini to end the threat. Constantini retired the Pride in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Constantini allowed just three hits and struck out three to earn the win. Junior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) went 1-for-3 and scored twice.
The Pirates return to action next weekend at the University of Alabama Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala. from Mar. 2-4. Pairings have not yet been announced.
