Softball Rolls Past Iona, 13-3

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. The Seton Hall softball team defeated Iona College on Wednesday, 13-3, in non-conference action.  Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.

The Pirates immediately seized control of the game with a three-run first inning.  After Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) doubled, Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to bring up Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.), who laced a two-run double.  Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) later singled to plate Pease.

SHU would post four more runs in the third inning, all coming with two outs.  Menichetti picked up another single before Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) was hit by a pitch.  Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas) followed with an RBI single, as did Madon Maile (Jenkintown, Pa.) to make it 5-0.  Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) drove in two more with a single before the Gaels finally got out of the inning.

Iona scored three times in the bottom of the fourth, all unearned runs off winning pitcher Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.), who scattered six hits while striking out four for her 13^th win of the season.

SHU struck again in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs.  Menichetti picked up an RBI groundout, and Constantini later knocked in two runs with a single to make it 10-3.

Pease and Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) came up with RBI singles in the seventh as the Pirates scored three more runs.

Waldron, Pease, Menichetti, Constantini, and Steinseifzer all had two hits each for SHU.  Pease finished with three runs scored and three RBI.

The Pirates return to action on May 5 when Louisville visits Ivy Hill Park.
