Men's Soccer Ties Monmouth in Exhibition, 2-2

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall men’s soccer team opened its exhibition season with a 2-2 tie against Monmouth on Wednesday night.  Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) tallied both Pirate goals, each coming in the first half.

After controlling the action early on, Seton Hall finally broke through in the 24^th minute.  After a battle for possession in the Monmouth zone, freshman Bryan Longo (Lexington, Mass.) gained control and quickly fed a pass to Giusfredi near the top of the box.  The junior forward blasted a shot past Hawk goalkeeper Daniel Schenkel into the top right of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Less than 13 minutes later the Pirates would strike again.  After taking a feed from freshman Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) down the left side, Giusfredi again found the top right corner of the goal for his second score of the night and a 2-0 SHU lead.

Monmouth collected its first score of the game on a penalty kick early in the second half.  Damon Wilson’s blast was deflected by freshman goalie Sean Carr (Glendora, N.J.) but trickled in to make it 2-1 in the 46^th minute.

The Hawks would tie the game late in the second half when Ryan Kinne scored into an empty net after a scramble for the ball drew Carr out of position.  The teams did not play an overtime period.

Monmouth enjoyed a 13-9 advantage in shot, although the Pirates came up with the better scoring chances.  Carr made two saves in reserve of sophomore Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.), who played a scoreless first half.

Giusfredi and Martinez each got off three shots for SHU, with freshman Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) adding two and senior Jon Lewandowski (Midland Park, N.J.) attempting one.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for an Alumni exhibition match.
