Men's Soccer Takes Wild 4-3 Win Over Princeton

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. A blast from midfield by junior forward Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) found the back of the net in the 84^th minute to give Seton Hall a 4-3 win over Princeton in front of a packed house at Owen T. Carroll Field on Monday night. 

After Princeton (0-4-0) tied the game at three on a goal by Kyle McHugh at the 83:14 mark, Seton Hall freshman Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) put the ball in play from midfield to Giusfredi, who rocketed a 60-yard shot just between the cross bar and the outstretched arms of the leaping Tiger goaltender to put SHU back ahead and send the crowd into a frenzy.  Just five seconds came off the game clock before the Pirates (3-3-0) reassumed the lead that they would hold onto over a frantic final six minutes.

The five seconds between scores ties the NCAA Division I record for second shortest amount of time between goals by opposing teams.  The record is three seconds in a 1998 game between UC-Santa Barbara and UCLA.

SHU scored the game’s opening goal in the 20^th minute when freshman Bryan Longo (Lexington, Mass.) slid a pass from the right side to the lower left box that Welker put home for his third tally of the season.  The Pirates held the 1-0 lead through halftime.

In the 53^rd minute, a failed clearing pass by SHU was stolen by Brandon Busch and quickly put into the back of the net to even the match.

Seton Hall regrouped quickly to go back in front.  In the 59^th minute, senior Jon Lewandowski (Midland Park, N.J.) hit classmate Justin McGrath (Brick, N.J.) with a lead pass down the middle that he easily put home after outrunning the Tiger defense to make it 2-1.  Less than six minutes later, McGrath scored his second goal of the game and third of the season after winning a loose ball and beating Tiger keeper Joe Walter to the right.

Princeton cut the lead to 3-2 when a loose ball came to Dan Cummins on the left side that he promptly rocketed into the net in the 76^th minute.  McHugh evened things up less than eight minutes later before Giusfredi’s spectacular fifth goal of the season.

SHU sophomore netminder Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) made seven saves while picking up his third win of the year.  Walter stopped three shots for the Tigers.

The Pirates kick off BIG EAST play on Friday at Louisville.
