SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall men’s soccer team dropped its first home match of the 2007 season on Friday night, falling 2-0 to Villanova. The Pirates (3-6-0, 0-3-0) allowed two second half goals in an evenly played match.
The Wildcats (7-2-0, 2-1-0) got a pair of goals from Sean Mergenthal to take the victory. In the 67th minute, Miles Harrison sent a pass from the left side down the middle to Mergenthal, who headed into the upper right corner for the first score of the game.
In the 81st minute, a perfect cross from Mike Seamon gave Mergenthal a point blank opportunity from just left of center to make it 2-0.
Both teams attempted 17 shots with five on goal in what was a close match all the way. The Wildcats had a 7-6 edge in corners.
Junior forward Eliseo Giusfredi (Paterson, N.J.) had a game-high eight shots to go along with an array of dazzling moves on the Villanova defenders. Adam Brazitis led the Wildcats with four attempts.
Sophomore netminder Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) made three saves in net for SHU. Jason Friel had five stops for Villanova.
The Pirates will host Rutgers on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
