Men's Soccer Falls To #4 St. John's, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.   The Seton Hall men’s soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Wednesday night as the #4 St. John’s Red Storm took a 3-1 win at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The match was a non-conference game and will not count towards the BIG EAST record of the Pirates (6-6-2) or the Red Storm (11-1-2).

St. John’s took the early lead in the 19^th minute when Connor Lade threaded a pass down the middle, drawing junior SHU keeper Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) up in the box.  Tafadzwa Chiduku won the race to the ball and converted a clear shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Storm struck again in the 43^rd minute when Ryan Soroka controlled a rebound and fed a pass to Joakim Helland for a blast from 15 yards out into the left corner, making it 2-0.

In the 60^th minute, Tadeu Terra sent a pass across the box from close range to Nelson Becerra, who had his shot deflect off McHenry and into the net to give St. John’s a 3-0 cushion.

Seton Hall’s offensive persistence paid off in the 77^th minute when a wild sequence drew the Red Storm’s Neal Kitson out of the goal, and senior Carlos Salazar (Kearny, N.J.) was on the spot to bury the ball home from 10 yards for his second goal of the season.

The Pirates finished the night with a 17-11 edge in shots, led by sophomores Samuel Petrone (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Jerry Saintil (East Orange, N.J.) who each had four attempts. 

Kitson had four saves to pick up the win for St. John’s, while McHenry was credited with three stops.

SHU is back in action on Saturday night at West Virginia, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
