Pittsburgh Topples Men's Soccer, 3-2

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.   The Seton Hall men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Pittsburgh on a rainy Saturday at Owen T. Carroll Field.  The Pirates (6-7-4, 2-4-4) close out the regular season on Friday at Connecticut as they battle for a spot in the BIG EAST Championship.

Prior to the match, seniors Yomar Gonzalez (Lodi, N.J.), Carlos Salazar (Kearny, N.J.), and Christian Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) were honored as they played their final home game.

The Pirates got off to a strong start, taking a 1-0 lead in the 19^th minute when sophomore Dritan Sela (Wayne, N.J.) headed in a corner kick from classmate Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) for his fifth goal of the season.

Seton Hall took advantage of another corner kick to take a 2-0 lead in the 28^th minute.  Vercollone sent the ball into the box, where sophomore Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) headed a pass to the right for Salazar that he blasted home from close range for his third score of the year.

Pitt (7-6-2, 3-5-1) cut the deficit to one in the 39^th minute when Joe Prince-Wright headed in a free kick off the foot of E.J. McCormick.

The Panthers tied things up in the 56^th minute when Mike McDade sent a long pass down the middle to McCormick, who beat a pair of Pirates’ defenders to the ball before finding the back of the net.

Pitt continued its pressure as the game wound down and finally took the lead when Prince-Wright took a cross from Justin Boehm and scored from the left side of the box in the 85^th minute, making it 3-2.

SHU made a valiant effort over the final few minutes, but a shot from Sela in the 88^th minute went high, allowing the Panthers to escape with the win.

Eric Barnes stopped nine shots for Pitt, while junior Hall keeper Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) had six saves.

SHU outshot the Panthers 19-16, with Sela and sophomore Jerry Saintil (East Orange, N.J.) accounting for four each.  McDade also had four attempts for Pitt.
