SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall softball team split a doubleheader with Iona on Tuesday, winning game one 3-2 before falling in the nightcap, 7-5.

Iona jumped out to an early lead in game one when Melanie Gettins drove in Erin Kyle with an RBI single to make it 1-0 in the top of the first inning.  But freshman pitcher Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wisc.) retired the next three Gaels in order to escape further trouble.

Freshman Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) singled and stole second with one out in the bottom of the third, setting the table for an RBI double by junior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) that tied the score.  With two outs, senior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) ripped a double into the rightfield gap to score Menichetti and give the Hall the lead, 2-1.

Iona loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on a pair of singles and a walk with two outs, but Stilwell retired Nicole Carrabus on a groundout to shortstop to get out of the jam.

In the fifth inning, Gaels’ pitcher Becky Riccitelli helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at two.

The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the frame, but a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and one out doused the rally.

Freshman Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) came in on relief for SHU in the sixth, getting the final two outs to retire the Gaels.

Junior Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J) led off the bottom of the sixth with a line drive homerun to left field, giving the Hall a 3-2 lead.  Forsyth issued a one-out walk in the seventh before slamming the door on Iona, giving the Pirates the victory. 

Glynos was 2-for-3 on the day, while Reed was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.  Forsyth (6-5) worked 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.  Stilwell struck out eight in 5.1 innings.

The Gaels jumped ahead early again in game two on a three-run homer by Riccitelli off senior Jessica Jones (Tyler, Texas) in the top of the first inning. 

Seton Hall answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.  Junior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) singled and made it to third base on an error by the right fielder before scoring on a single by Best.

In the bottom of the third, freshman Jamie Gates (Emmaus, Pa.) led off with a walk and later came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Best, bringing the Hall to within 3-2.

Reed led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and the Pirates had first and second after Menichetti reached on a fielder’s choice.  Waldron sacrificed the runners over, and Reed scored on a Best single to tie the game.  Menichetti was cut down on the play at third after rounding the bag, and Iona’s Katie Jo Passero retired the next batter to keep the score 3-3.

Courtney Christie singled off sophomore Pirate reliever Danielle Zanzalari (Carteret, N.J.) to lead off the Iona sixth, and she moved to third on Paige Cauley’s sacrifice that was played into an error.  Forsyth relieved Zanzalari but could not stop the bleeding as the Gaels batted around while scoring four times to take a 7-3 lead.

Junior Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) led of the Pirates’ sixth with a walk and later scored on Reed’s RBI single.  Senior pinch-runner Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) scored on a wild pitch after replacing freshman Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.), who reached on an error, making it 7-5.  Menichetti kept the rally alive with a two-out single, but Iona escaped the jam with a two-run lead intact.
