SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall softball team split a doubleheader with Iona on Tuesday, winning game one 3-2 before falling in the nightcap, 7-5. Freshman Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) singled and stole second with one out in the bottom of the third, setting the table for an RBI double by junior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) that tied the score. With two outs, senior Jenna Best ( In the fifth inning, Gaels’ pitcher Becky Riccitelli helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at two. The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the frame, but a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and one out doused the rally. Freshman Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) came in on relief for SHU in the sixth, getting the final two outs to retire the Gaels. Junior Daria Glynos ( Glynos was 2-for-3 on the day, while Reed was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Forsyth (6-5) worked 1.2 innings without allowing a hit. Stilwell struck out eight in 5.1 innings. The Gaels jumped ahead early again in game two on a three-run homer by Riccitelli off senior Jessica Jones ( Seton Hall answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Junior Kealan Waldron ( In the bottom of the third, freshman Jamie Gates ( Reed led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and the Pirates had first and second after Menichetti reached on a fielder’s choice. Waldron sacrificed the runners over, and Reed scored on a Best single to tie the game. Menichetti was cut down on the play at third after rounding the bag, and Iona’s Katie Jo Passero retired the next batter to keep the score 3-3. Courtney Christie singled off sophomore Pirate reliever Danielle Zanzalari ( Junior Shannon Pease ( Zanzalari (0-1) took the loss for the Hall, while Riccitelli saved the win for Passero and the Gaels. The Pirates host Marist tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
