COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Seton Hall softball team put up 12 runs in the first inning, and senior Jessica Jones (Tyler, Texas) struck out eight batters and allowed just one hit as the Pirates blanked Mt. St. Mary’s 12-0. Seton Hall went 2-2 for the weekend at the Terrapin Invitational and is now 6-8 on the year.
Senior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) started the big inning with an RBI single to score Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.). Back-to-back singles by Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) loaded the bases for Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J.), who walked to put the Pirates ahead 2-0.
Seton Hall scored two more runs after a throwing error by the Mount’s starting pitcher to make it 4-0. A fielder’s choice brought in another run, and Menichetti’s second double of the inning brought home Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.).
After run scoring base-hit from Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.), Best drew a walk to load the bases for Amanda Winn. Winn crushed a grand-slam homer to clear the bases and cap the offensive explosion.
Jones earned her first victory of the season, and allowed just one base-runner in four innings of work.
Seton Hall will play at the Hoya Invitational from March 15-16. The Pirates open up the tournament with a 1:00 p.m. game against the hosts, Georgetown.
