BRONX, N.Y. The Seton Hall softball team fell to Fordham 4-1 and 11-2 in a double-header on Thursday. The Pirates record dropped to 15-22 on the season.
Junior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) and freshman Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) started game one with back-to-back walks. Senior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) pushed both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and junior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) singled to bring in Menichetti to make it, 1-0.
The Rams had three consecutive hits off starting pitcher Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second. Schweitzer managed to get out of the jam unscathed after striking out Erin Fisher and getting Jessica Weckenman to line into a double play to end the inning.
Seton Hall squandered an opportunity to add some insurance runs, leaving the bases loaded in the third, and Fordham took advantage in the bottom half of the frame. Allison Twarowski hit a solo shot, and Mary Beth Puccio hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Rams a 2-1 edge.
In the bottom of the fourth, Erin Fisher took Schweitzer deep for a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Pirates loaded the bases again in the sixth after junior Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) walked, freshman Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) hit a single, and junior pinch-hitter Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) drew another walk. With two away, Menichetti hit into a fielder’s choice and Schillizzi was out at third on the force play
Seton Hall had one last chance to rally in the seventh when Best earned a walk and Waldron notched her second hit of the game. The runners moved to second and third on a ground out by Winn, but the Pirates failed to bring any scores.
Schweitzer (3-6) hurled six innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits. Waldron was the only player with multiple hits.
In game two, Fordham sent 10 batters to the plate and capitalized on three Seton Hall errors in the second inning to score six runs.
Senior Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) and Best each registered singles to put runners on first and third in the top of the third. Waldron delivered her 10th double of the season to cut the deficit to, 6-2.
The Rams responded by sending another 10 batters to the dish in the fourth en route to a five-run inning to make it an 11-2 ballgame.
Freshman Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wisc.) (2-4) took the loss, allowed six runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings. Waldron now has an 11-game hit-streak, and is one game shy of tying her own school single-season record.
Seton Hall returns to action at Providence for a double-header on Friday, April 11, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
