Softball Gets No-Hit; Swept at LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. LIU’s Blaire Porter threw a no-hitter as the Seton Hall softball team fell 8-0 in an opening game of a double-header. The Pirates (17-26) dropped the second game by the same score.

In the first, Seton Hall put runners on first and second off two LIU errors, but could not bring in any runs. Those would be the only base-runners for the Pirates in game one.

Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) retired the first seven batters, before surrendering a base-knock to Raylene Asman. Asman stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came around to score after an error by Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.).

Mareisha Marker and Jessie DePippo each registered RBI hits, and Brittany Murphy hit a two-run shot to make it 5-0 after three innings.

With the bases loaded with Blackbirds in the fourth, Schweitzer threw a wild pitch to add another insurance run. A run scoring double and a sacrifice fly made it 8-0 to enforce the eight-run rule.

Schweitzer (3-7) threw four innings, and allowed just three earned runs on nine hits.

In game two, Celina Castillo hit a ball just out of the reach of centerfielder Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.), and LIU took an early lead. Vanessa Mejia added a single to score DePippo, making it, 2-0.

Constantini gave the Pirates their first hit of the twinbill after blooping a single behind first base, but senior Christa Leighton (Brewster, N.Y.) grounded into a double-play to end the third inning.

DePippo launched a solo-shot in the bottom of the inning off freshman Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wisc.) to push the Blackbird’s lead to 3-0. Stilwell was lifted in favor of senior Jessica Jones (Tyler, Texas) with no outs and runners on first and third.

Murphy reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, but Jones forced a pair of pop ups, and a line out to short to get out of the jam.

The Pirates threatened in the fourth after Menichetti started the inning with a walk. Junior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) laced a single to leftfield, and both runners moved into scoring position after a ground out. However, Seton Hall could not bring any runs in the inning.

LIU tacked on three more runs in the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-0, and Renae Beauchman hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fifth to force the eight-run rule.

Stilwell (2-5) returned to pitch in the fourth, allowed five runs while striking out three. Constantini was 2-for-2 from the plate

Seton Hall returns to action at Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 19, for a double-header. Game one is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
