PITTSBURGH, Pa.. The Seton Hall softball team lost to Pittsburgh by scores of 5-4 and 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates are now 17-28 overall and 4-12 in the BIG EAST.
Freshman Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) got thing started by reaching base on an error. Reed moved to second base on a ground out, and later came around to score on an RBI hit from senior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) to make it 1-0 after one inning.
Sophomore Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) had no problems getting through the first two innings, but Reba Tutt tied the score with a solo home-run in the third.
In the fifth, senior Christa Leighton (Brewster, N.Y.) recorded a lead-off single, and junior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) drew a walk. An error by the Panthers third baseman loaded the bases for Best, who got on via fielder’s choice to give the lead back to Seton Hall.
Junior Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) delivered a single to score Waldron and Menichetti, making it a 4-1 ballgame.
Pittsburgh struck back in the bottom of the inning with Tutt hitting a bunt single and scoring on an RBI single by Jess Dignon. An infield single by Sam Card put runners on the corners for Mary Hecker, who blasted a three-run shot to give the Panthers their first lead of the game at, 5-4.
Kayla Zinger retired the final six Pirate batters in order to seal the win.
Forsyth (10-13) took the loss, giving up seven hits in six innings while striking out four.
In game two, Zinger used her bat against Seton Hall, hitting an RBI single off of junior Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.). An error by Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) put the Panthers on top 2-0, and Card went deep in the third to make it 3-0 after three innings.
Junior Amanda Winn (Manahwakin, N.J.) answered with a dinger of her own in the top of the fourth to pull the Pirates within two.
Pittsburgh added two more in the bottom of the sixth, but Seton Hall tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Pease began the inning with a double to leftfield. Senior Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) ripped a double of her own to score Pease to make it 5-2, but Zinger got Menichetti to line out to end the game.
Schweitzer (3-8) threw six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out three.
Seton Hall is back in action tomorrow, April 20, for a double-header at Syracuse slated to begin at noon.
