SYRACUSE, N.Y. The Seton Hall softball team blew a three-run lead and lost 4-3 in the first game of a double-header at Syracuse. The Pirates (17-30, 4-14) then came up short in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap.
Senior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) helped Seton Hall strike first by belting a solo homerun in the fourth inning to give the Pirates a 1-0 advantage.
Syracuse threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second with two out, but senior Jessica Jones (Tyler, Texas) struck out Chanel Roehner to get out of the jam.
A double by junior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.), a single by Best, and a walk by junior Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) loaded the bases. Brittany Gardner came out of the bullpen and struck out junior Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) for the second out. However, Gardner did not fare so well against freshman Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.), who hit a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0.
Sophomore Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) relieved Jones in the bottom of the inning, and gave up a lead-off home run to Amy Kelly, pulling Syracuse within two. Forsyth then issued a walk and a single. An error by Schillizzi loaded the bases, and Nicole Miller tied the game with a two-run single.
Jamie Kelling started the seventh with a single. Roehner was thrown out sacrificing Kelling, but Kelling was able to draw an errant throw to third base and came around to score the game-winning run.
Forsyth (10-13) took the loss, pitching two innings. Jones threw five innings of two-hit ball, striking out four batters. Schillizzi and Best each went 2-for-3 from the plate.
In the second game, Amy Kelley blasted a two-run homer off Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) to give the Orange a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Junior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) erased the deficit with a single to score Pease and Schillizzi in the second. The Pirates had a chance to take over the lead, but stranded the bases loaded as the game remained tied at 2-2.
Kelley delivered another blow to Seton Hall in the bottom of the inning, crushing a three-run shot to make it 5-2.
After a Pease walk and a double by junior Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J.), Schillizzi ripped a double to turn it into a one-run game at 5-4, but that was as close as the Pirates would come.
Schweitzer (3-9) pitched six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, while fanning two batters. Menichetti was 2-for-4 with the two RBI, and freshman Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) was 2-for-3.
Seton Hall will wrap up its long road-trip at Sacred Heart for a double-header on Thursday, April 24. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
