SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team closed out its exhibition season on Monday night with a 6-1 win over Army in an extended game at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates host Monmouth on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the season opener.
Army scored on is first shot of the game, a header by Michael Leach in the sixth minute. The Hall answered less than two minutes later when sophomore Samuel Petrone (Glen Rock, N.J.) chased down a long pass from classmate Brayan Martinez (South Orange, N.J.) and beat Army netminder A.J. Glubzinski to the left to tie the game, 1-1.
Early in the second of three 40-minute periods, the Pirates offense began to heat up. Martinez and sophomore Steven Rose (Acton, Mass.) worked a beautiful give and go, with Martinez finding the back of the net from 10 yards out to put SHU in front. Two minutes later, Rose put home a nifty pass from sophomore Bryan Longo (Lexington, Mass.) in front of the goal to make it 3-1.
In the final period, junior Kyle Giuliana (Lincoln Park, N.J.) scored on a header, assisted by senior Carlos Salazar (Kearny, N.J.) and junior Erik Vendola (Sparta, N.J.). Salazar and sophomore Dritan Sela (Wayne, N.J.) accounted for the final two tallies.
The ball was in the Pirates' possession nearly the entire night, resulting in a 35-8 advantage in shot attempts and a 16-3 edge in corner kicks.
