PISCATAWAY, N.J. The Seton Hall men’s soccer team fell on Sunday at Rutgers, losing 2-1. The Pirates (5-5-0, 1-3-0) could not hold onto a one-goal lead as the Scarlet Knights (4-3-2, 1-2-1) put together a game-winning flurry midway through the second half.
After a scoreless first half, the Hall grabbed the lead when sophomore Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute for his second score of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
In the 64th minute, a Rutgers corner kick was headed out of the box by the Pirates’ defense, but Dilly Duka took control of the ball for the Scarlet Knights and ripped a shot to the upper middle of the net to even the score.
Less than two minutes later, Rutgers would pick up the game-winner. Sam Archer led an upfield rush with a pass to Kevin McFadden, who sent a cross that was deflected by junior Hall keeper Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) but still found the foot of Duka for the score.
SHU managed just one more shot on goal, but freshman Giovanni Zammiello (Randolph, N.J.) had his attempt stopped by Rutgers keeper Amir Haghshenas in the 71st minute.
The Pirates managed to outshoot Rutgers, 15-13, and also enjoyed a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Martinez paced the Hall with five shots, while three others had two each. Duka and Gaetano Panuccio had three each for Rutgers.
McHenry and Haghshenas each had three saves in goal.
SHU is back in action at home on Saturday night when Providence visits for a 7:00 p.m. match.
