PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team picked up a valuable point on the road with a 1-1 tie at Providence on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (4-6-3, 1-4-3) remain in a tight race for a berth in the BIG EAST Championship.
The Friars (5-5-3, 2-4-2) finished with a 23-14 edge in shot attempts. The teams were even in shots on goal, however, with seven each.
The Hall got on the board in the 76th minute when junior Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) followed up his own blocked shot rebound with a blast into the left corner of the net to make it 1-0. It was the team-high seventh goal of the season for Welker.
It took a penalty kick for the Friars to even the score when Roy Sandeman beat Pirates' senior Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) in the 86th minute. Regulation time expired with the score still knotted at one, and neither team could breakthrough in overtime.
Welker led the Pirates with four shots, three of which were on goal. Junior Samuel Petrone (Glen Rock, N.J.) chipped in with three. Matt Marcin fired a game-high seven attempts for the Friars.
McHenry recorded six saves in the match, giving him 228 in his career, which ties Ray Purdon for third all-time at Seton Hall. Timothy Murray also had six stops for Providence.
The Pirates are back in action on Tuesday at #9 Maryland, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Terrapins are the reigning national champion.
