
Rider Swims Past Women's Swimming And Diving, 177-117

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The women's swimming and diving team were defeated by Rider, 177-17, Friday evening at the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium in South Orange. Despite the loss, nine members of the team qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in 14 events.
Junior Brittany Henning (Batavia, Ill.) finished with two first place finishes to lead the women's team. She earned a trip to the conference championships with qualifying times in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, while sophomore Kaley Swider (Galloway, N.J.) did the same finishing just behind Henning in each race. Freshman Alie Zelenky (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) also qualified finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.
Senior Natalie Toczylowski (Sandwich, Mass.) earned a conference qualifying time with a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, adding to her second place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Megan Rathbun (Long Valley, N.J.) recorded a third place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Freshman Brenna O'Keefe (Allentown, Pa.) earned a qualifying bid with a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and a third place time in the 200-yard butterfly. Classmate Andrea Shuba (Pittsburgh, Pa.) did the same finishing third in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Marilyn Purvis (Hyde Park, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a qualifying time as well.
Sophomore Rose Virgilio (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) finished with second place qualifying times in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle.
In the diving events, red-shirt sophomore Brittany Hervey (Bethpage, N.Y.) finished second in the 3-meter event with a BIG EAST qualifying score.
The women's swimming and diving team will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to compete against Lafayette, Loyola, and BIG EAST rival Georgetown. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
