PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Pittsburgh's Chris Wilcox scored the game-winner in the 86th minute as the Seton Hall men's soccer team fell to the Panthers, 3-2, on Wednesday night. The Pirates (4-9-3, 1-6-3) close out the season at home against West Virginia on Saturday at Owen T. Carroll Field.
In the 18th minute, Alex Betancourt gave the Panthers (2-12-2, 1-8-1) a 1-0 lead when he shot and scored from just outside the box to the left side of the goal.
Just a few minutes later, junior Samuel Petrone (Glen Rock, N.J.) was credited with a goal for the Hall when his shot deflected off a Pitt defender and found its way into the back of the net, tying the match at one.
The Panthers regained the lead late in the first half after a Ryan Brode tally in the 40th minute. Junior Dritan Sela (Wayne, N.J.) scored off an assist from classmate Andrew Welker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) in the 82nd minute when his shot hit the crossbar and dropped in to tie the game, 2-2.
But Pitt would strike last, getting the game-winner from Chris Wilcox in the 86th minute off passes from Matt Baker and Betancourt.
Senior Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) made three stops for the Hall, while Zack Matthews had seven saves for the Panthers. Welker paced the Pirates with five shots, helping them to a 16-13 advantage on the night.
