Softball Blanked by UIC, 12-0

LAS VEGAS, Nev. The Seton Hall softball team fell to 0-2 after a 12-0 loss to UIC at the Sportco Kickoff Classic. The Pirates return to action against UNLV at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.

The Flames struck first, taking a 1-0 lead off an RBI double from Ashley Hewett. Hewett moved to third on a passed ball and scored after a single from Christie Sedden to make it 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Seddon drove in two more runs with a two-out knock in the fourth inning to double the UIC lead to 4-0. Senior pitcher Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) hit the next batter and walked the next two to bring in another Flame run.

Seton Hall strung together a rally in the fourth, after Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) reached on an error and Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) singled. The runners moved to second and third with two outs, putting Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) at the plate. Loewenstein ripped the first pitch, but the Flames third baseman was in perfect position to catch the frozen rope in the air to end the jam.

Sophomore Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wisc.) came in relief and found herself in trouble after a single and a hit batter. After a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch brought in both runners to extend the UIC advantage to 7-0.

The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but could not come up with a key hit in the inning.

Marissa Marinacci blasted a three-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-0 to enforce the eight-run mercy rule.

Schweitzer threw four innings and took the loss. Loewenstein caught 2-of-3 baserunners stealing.
