COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Seton Hall softball team split a pair of games to start the Maryland Invitational on Friday. The Pirates (7-9) won against Delaware, 11-2, before dropping an 11-1 decision to Maryland.
Against the Blue Hens (2-5), Seton Hall scored a run on Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) sacrifice fly in the third. The Pirates tacked on three more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.), Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.), and Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.).
Delaware cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning after a two-run single from Katie DeSalvo, but the Pirate bats erupted in the fifth.
Senior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) started the inning with a walk, and moved to third after a sacrifice and a single by Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.). Winn drove a ball to center to bring in Waldron. The next batter, Pease, hit a single on the ground and the righfielder misplayed the ball to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Pirate four-run sixth inning was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Waldron and freshman Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) to give SHU the eight-run edge to enforce the mercy rule.
Forsyth pitched a complete game, and improved to 3-4 on the year. She allowed eight hits and struck out four. Pease was 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The Terps (11-9) put three runs in the first inning and put the game away with a six-run third inning and never looked back.
Schweitzer (4-4) was charged for seven earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Seton Hall looks to bounce back as they take on Howard at 9:00 a.m. and Mt. St. Mary’s at 5:00 p.m. on day two of the Maryland Invitational.
