Softball Loses 5-1 to Fordham

COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Seton Hall softball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Fordham to conclude play at the Maryland Invitational. The loss drops the Pirates to 9-10 on the season.

Fordham took a 1-0 lead after an RBI single from Megan Wiggins in the second inning.

Lindsey Bright started the third with a bunt single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter grounded a ball to short, but instead of getting the force Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) threw to third base, but Bright slid under the tag to put runners on the corners. An error by Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) loaded the bases.

The next batter hit a grounder back to Schillizzi, who tried to get the force out at the plate, but Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) could not handle the throw home. Junior Danielle Zanzalari (Carteret, N.J.) walked in a run to extend the Ram lead to 3-0 before retiring the side.

Seton Hall started to make a comeback bid in the bottom of the fourth after Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) led things off with a double off the wall in center. Waldron then singled to put runners on the corners, and Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) grounded out to short to plate Bennett.

Fordham scored two more runs in the sixth inning after two more gaffes by the Pirates. A wild pitch scored Jocelyn Dearborn and a dropped fly ball allowed the Rams to push their cushion to 5-1.

Seton Hall opens up BIG EAST play with a double-header against Syracuse on Saturday, March 21. The twinbilling will also mark the home opener for the Pirates, who will begin their fifth season at Ivy Hill Park.
