SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall softball team used a pair of long-balls and a strong relief appearance from Danielle Zanzalari (Carteret, N.J.) to top Syracuse, 5-1, in game one of a double-header. The Pirates (10-11, 1-1) were later shutout, 9-0, in game two by Orange pitcher Jenna Caira.
Zanzalari (1-2) picked up her first collegiate win after throwing four innings without allowing a hit and fanning four batters.
Syracuse’s (11-9, 1-1) Stephanie Watts led off game one with a base-hit. Jamie Kelling sacrificed the runner over to second base and Watts took off for third after seeing the base was vacant. Freshman Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) tried to come in from leftfield to cover the bag, but could not handle the throw from Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) and the Orange took a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall tied the game with one swing of the bat in the fourth inning when sophomore Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) delivered her second home run of the year to start the frame.
Later in the inning, hits from Kaelin and Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) along with a walk from Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) loaded the bases for Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.), who brought in the go-ahead run with a single to left.
Sophomore Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) extended the lead to 4-1 with a two-run blast to straightaway centerfield in the sixth. The Pirates tacked on another score after Menichetti was walked with the bases juiced.
In game two, the Orange took another early lead after a three-run shot from Kelly Saco off of Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the first inning.
Seton Hall had chances to cut into its deficit, but left runners on in each of the first three innings. Syracuse did not squander its chance to extend the lead in the top of the fourth, and a grand slam from Watts put the game out of reach in the fourth inning.
Schweitzer took the loss in game two, dropping her record to 5-5 on the season.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, March 22, when they host UConn. First-pitch of the twinbilling is scheduled for noon.
