Schweitzer's Gem Helps Softball Split with Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. Senior Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game, allowing just one run to lift the Seton Hall softball team to a 2-1 victory over Villanova in game two of a double-header. The Pirates (22-27-1, 9-13) fell in game one, 5-2.

Schweitzer allowed eight hits and struck out one batter to improve to 12-10 on the year.

Senior Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) sent a long ball over the wall in left-center to give Seton Hall a 1-0 edge in the second inning of game two.

In the third, Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) recorded a single back up the middle, and stole second base. Sophomore Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.) hit a sharp grounder through the left side of the infield that reached the wall for a double to bring in Reed an make it a two-run ballgame.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning, but Schweitzer forced Meghan Morese to ground into a 5-2-3 double play to prevent Villanova from scoring. The next batter hit a ground ball to Schillizzi, who was interfered with to get the final out.

In the sixth, the Wildcats threatened again by putting runners on the corners. Villanova’s Jamie O’Hara stole second base and Shannon O’Brien took off for home on the throw to second to cut the deficit in half. Schweitzer ended the threat by getting Eryn Teague to ground out to second base, and retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) got Seton Hall on the board in the first inning of game one with a two-out double to Schillizzi, who drew a walk prior to Kaelin’s at bat.

Seton Hall extended the lead to 2-0 in the third after Waldron started the frame off with a double, and came around to score on an RBI single from Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.).

Jackie Dempsey tied the score with a double to the gap in right-center in the bottom of the inning, and Meghan Morese followed with a base-hit, putting the Wildcats ahead, 3-2. With two away, Jess O’Boyle pushed the advantage to 5-2, jacking a two-run homer to left-center.

Junior Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) (8-13) allowed just one hit after the third inning, but still took the loss. Senior Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) and Kaelin each recorded two hits.

The Pirates left runners on base in each inning, and stranded 10 runners for the game.

Seton Hall returns to action on Sunday, April 26 at Rutgers for a double-header beginning at noon.
