SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team dropped its home opener on Monday night, falling 3-2 to Princeton at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates (1-2-0) were led by junior Steven Rose (Acton, Mass.), who netted a pair of goals in defeat.
The Hall came out sharp and needed just over 10 minutes to take the lead. Junior Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) lined a free kick from the right endline to the front of the net, where Rose cleanly headed the ball past Princeton keeper Sean Lynch to make it 1-0.
The Tigers (2-0-0) tied things up moments later when Devin Muntz sent a pass down the middle to Antoine Hoppenot, who beat a Pirate defender to the ball before sending a shot by senior Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) that evened the score in the 13th minute.
Josh Walburn gave Princeton the lead in the 24th minute when he controlled a loose ball 20 yards out and sent a blast into the back of the net.
After a Pirate attacker was dragged down in the box in the 33rd minute, Rose stepped up and lined a penalty kick into the left side of the net to make it 2-2.
The Tigers again had an immediate answer and would take the lead for good in the 35th minute. A direct free kick by Walburn ricocheted off the shoulder of a Seton Hall defender, leaving McHenry with no chance as the ball nestled into the top right corner and put Princeton ahead, 3-2.
The Hall had the better chances in the second half, outshooting the Tigers, 7-4. Lynch stopped the only Pirate attempt that made it on goal, a shot by junior Bryan Longo (Lexington, Mass.).
The Pirates finished with a 16-11 edge in shots, but had only three on net. McHenry made four saves for the Hall, while Lynch was credited with one stop on the other end.
The Pirates are back in action on Friday night when they host Virginia Commonwealth, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
