SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall softball coach Ray Vander May announced Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) have signed National Letters of Intent to play with the Pirates next season.
"I think we have two great players coming into the fold for next season," Vander May said. "Both of these players are also very good students and we are excited that they've decided to come and play with us."
DeLuca was the 2009 Essex Player of the Year in addition to being a third-team All-State team member. She is currently a senior at Mount Saint Dominic Academy and is coached by Lorenzo Sozio. DeLuca also plays summer ball with the New Jersey Heist, under the direction of Sergio Rodriguez.
"Maria was a student of mine when I taught at Cedar Grove middle school," stated Vander May. "That's where I started to notice her talents. I consider her a versatile player that has good speed, very good defensively, and can hit. I think Maria could fill a few different positions, and on top of that she is a clutch player."
Henze did not play for her high school team, but was coached by former Pittsburgh Pirate catcher Ed Lynch with her club team, the Maryland Legends. She played with current catcher Nicole Loewenstein and is primarily a third baseman, but can play first if needed. Henze was an Adidas Futures Top-100 Unsigned player in both 2007 and 2008. She is also a member of the National Honor Society
"Meredith is a player we've had an eye on for a little while. We really wanted to strengthen our depth at third base, because besides (freshman) Kirby Groves we don't really have anyone else to play that position. Meredith was one of the top recruits in the country and is the real-deal. With so many people after her, we were very happy she decided to come to Seton Hall."
The Pirates kick off the 2010 season at the UNC-Charlotte Green & White Tournament on February 26 with games against Boston University and UNC-Charlotte.
