SETON HALL QUICK HITS
The Pirates will open up the 2010 campaign this weekend at the UNC-Charlotte Green & White Tournament. The tournament format starts as a round-robin event on Friday and Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon, the teams will be seeded and play in the semifinals, leading to the consolation and championship games to be played on Sunday.
Seton Hall is coming off a 24-31-1 season in 2009, including a 10-14 mark in BIG EAST play which was the most conference wins posted by a Pirate team since 2005.
The Pirates return sophomore Kristen Kaelin and junior Nalin Bennett, who each earned All-BIG EAST Second Team Honors last season.
Freshmen Cashel Gaffey, Kirby Groves, Brittany Hammer, Hannah Hill, and Brooke Tull will look to make their collegiate debuts.
FAMILIAR FOES
The Pirates will face Marshall and Charlotte for the second straight seasons. The Herd topped SHU, 5-3, at the Sportco Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas in both teams season opener. The 49ers took a pair of games from the Pirates (3-2 in 8 innings, and 8-1) in the First Pitch Classic in Charlotte.
POSITION CHANGES
A couple of Seton Hall players will be shifting positions this season. Junior Brittany Schillizzi moves from short over to second base, while sophomore Kristen Kaelin will handle first base duties after mainly playing the outfield and designated player in 2009.
KLEPTOMANIAC
Junior outfielder Michelle Reed swiped 27 bases last season, setting a new SHU single-season record. Coming into 2010, she needs just 27 more to eclipse the Pirate career record held by Melissa Landeck.
MILESTONE AHEAD
With her next strikeout, senior pitcher Ashley Forsyth will become just the eighth pitcher in school history to fan 200 batters. She currently ranks seventh on the career strikeout list.
BIG EAST PREDICTIONS
The Pirates were selected to finish tied for 11th place with Villanova in the BIG EAST Preseason Coach’s Poll. Defending conference champion Louisville was picked as the favorite. The top eight teams advance to the BIG EAST Championship.
PIRATES INK TWO RECRUITS FOR 2011
Incoming freshmen Maria DeLuca and Meredith Henze have signed NLI’s to play at Seton Hall next season. DeLuca is the reigning Essex County Player of the Year, and Henze is an accomplished third baseman and former summer ball teammate of Nicole Loewenstein.
