CHARLOTTE, N.C - The Seton Hall softball team used a five-run third inning and a seven-run outburst in the seventh to beat Boston University, 12-7, in the first of five games at the Charlotte Green & White Tournament. The Pirates will play the host 49ers at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the first day of play.
Senior Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) recorded the win (1-0), and struck out nine batters. With her first strikeout of the game Forsyth became just the eighth pitcher to reach 200 career K's.
The Terriers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after a lead-off single by Jayme Mask and back-to-back home runs by April Setterlund and Rachel Herbert in the bottom of the first.
Infield singles by Brittany Hammer and Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) started the rally in the top of the third. Bennett swiped second base to put two runners into scoring position for Brittany Schillizzi (Paramus, N.J.), who doubled down the rightfield line to score Hammer. Sophomore Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) knocked in two more with a double of her own to tie the score and Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) belted a two-run shot to give the Pirates a 5-3 edge.
Forsyth retired the first two batters of the fourth inning with no issue, but surrendered a double to Rachel Moeller. Mask followed with a triple to pull BU within a run, but was thrown out at the home trying to score on an overthrow to the plate.
In the fifth, the Terriers tied the game, 5-5, on an RBI double by Caitlin Rentler. With runners on second and third and one out, Forsyth battled back to strike out the next batter and end the rally with a pop up to third.
Junior Jamie Gates started the seventh with her second single of the day. After a sacrifice bunt, Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) reached on an infield single and Seton Hall loaded the bases after an error allowed Bennett to take first base.
Schillizzi brought in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice without an out being recorded. Kaelin delivered a single to bring in Reed, and Loewenstein followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead, 8-5.
Sophomore Laura Canulli (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Cashel Gaffey added two more insurance runs on consecutive RBI singles to push the margin to a five. The Pirates scored another pair of runs after a dropped ball by the centerfielder to make it, 12-5.
