TOWSON, Md. - The Seton Hall softball team was swept by Towson, 6-0 and 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Pirates fall to 3-9 on the season.
Junior Katie Stilwell (Portage, Wis.) retired the first two batters with ease in the bottom of the first of game one, but issued a walk to Sammi DiPompo. DiPompo swiped second base and came around to score off of a single by Stef Streets, giving the Tigers (8-3) an early, 1-0, advantage.
Towson's Lindsey Kent led off the second with a single, and scored after Erika Stasch doubled to the wall in right-centerfield. The Pirates did make a nice relay throw into third to throw out Stasch and prevent a bigger inning for the Tigers.
DiPompo made it 3-0 in the third after hitting a double to the wall in centerfield, chasing Stilwell from the game. DiPompo came around to score after an error by the SHU third baseman.
Two errors by the Pirates allowed two more runs to plate, making the score 6-0, heading into the top of the seventh.
Stilwell earned the decision (1-4) after 2.1 innings of work. Senior Danielle Zanzalari (Carteret, N.J.) was effective out of the bullpen, allowing no earned runs in 3.1 innings in the circle.
Freshman Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a double in the defeat. Seton Hall left seven runners on base, all in the first five innings.
The poor defense continued in game two in the first inning. An overthrow on a routine ground ball allowed the leadoff runner to reach second base, and DiPompo singled up the middle immediately put Towson on top, 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, Streets delivered a three-run homer off of Ashley Forsyth (Freehold, N.J.) to extend the lead to, 4-0. Later in the inning, Stasch tripled to right field for another insurance run.
The Pirates finally got on the board in the fourth inning with Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.) drawing a lead-off walk and Cashel Gaffey (East Lyme, Conn.) belting a double to the fence in left-center. With two away, Jeanette Ragucci (Glen Gardner, N.J.) slapped a hard-hit grounder that the shortstop could not come up with, plating Loewenstein. However, the rally ended after Stasch fired home to get Gaffey out at the plate on the same play.
Freshman Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) pitched the best game of her young collegiate career, throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Gaffey went 2-for-3 from the dish. Forsyth falls to 2-3 on the year.
The Pirates will wrap up tournament play at the UMBC Dawg Pound Classic from March 12-13. SHU opens up the four-game slate at 10:00 a.m. Friday against Morgan State.
